We regret to inform you of the drowning death of Earl Cosby, 60, of Decatur, Georgia.

Information from Nicole Bailes, a public information officer for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, says Mr. Cosby was on a dock at Clarks Bridge Road at the northern end of Lake Lanier at about 10 PM on Sunday night, October 12, 2014.

Gusty winds in the area blew Mr. Cosby’s boat away from the dock and he jumped into the lake to retrieve it before it drifted too far away.  His attempt was unsuccessful and he tried to swim back to the dock before going under the water.  Sadly, he did not resurface, and an attempt by a relative to rescue him in the dark was also unsuccessful.

Authorities searched for Mr. Cosby for about an hour Sunday night and returned on Monday morning.

The dive teams from the Hall County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Natural Resources searched for and found Mr. Cosby’s body in less than six feet of water near the boat ramps just before noon on Monday, October 13th.

We extend our gratitude to those who tried to rescue Mr. Cosby and to those who searched for him on Sunday and Monday.

We extend our condolences to Mr. Cosby’s family and friends for their loss.
