Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA), founder of the Army Corps of Engineers Reform Caucus, recently introduced the “Marina Operator Tax Obligation Relief (MOTOR) Act of 2013” (H.R 2795). The“MOTOR Act” provides economic relief to lake communities by capping fees marinas operating on Corps lakes are forced to pay.
The Corps of Engineers have established arbitrary fees on all restaurant, gasoline, and marine engine sales in marinas operating on Corps lakes. Presently, Georgia districts charge upwards of 4.6% on all gross sales.
The MOTOR Act establishes a nationwide standard to lower this rate to 1% on specific services for all marina facilities in Corps-regulated areas.
“Anytime we can take a common sense philosophy and turn it into a reality, it’s a win for hardworking taxpayers,” said Collins. “This bill is about jobs, and 4.6% in subjective fees can be the difference in a Georgia-owned business staying open or closing. We’ve got to find smart solutions to give business owners the economic relief they desperately need. Ensuring that marinas of all sizes are subject to the same fee structure is one way we can do that.”
“I grew up on the lake, my kids have grown up on the lake, and I believe every American should be able to enjoy the natural beauty these freshwater bodies have to offer. The MOTOR Act creates an economic environment around our lakes that will protect American businesses and continue providing those types of opportunities for families.”
