The 2013 Lake Placid International, which took place on July 6-7, 2013, had the best sprint paddlers in the U.S. and Canada competing against one other for glory, honor and a nice trip to Lake Placid.

Lake Placid is one of the few places on our planet that is a lovelier place than Lake Lanier … for about six weeks a year in the summer, if the black flies don’t carry your pets, cell phones and small purses away like those crazed monkeys in The Wizard of Oz.

The event also served as the U.S. ParaCanoe Team Trials.  Team USA will compete at the 2013 ParaCanoe World Championships in Duisburg, Germany, scheduled for August 28-September 1, 2013, as part of the 2013 Sprint World Championships.

The nominees are:

  • K-1 Women: Kelly Allen (LTA), Megan Blunk (TA), Carol Rogers (A)
  • K-1 Men: Nik Miller (LTA), David Etier (TA), Ryan Padilla (A)
  • V-1 Women: Anja Pierce (LTA), Megan Blunk (TA), Ann Yoshida (A)
  • V-1 Men: Greg Crouse (LTA), Bob Balk (TA), Vadim Kin (A)

Kaitlyn McElroy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led the way for U.S. senior paddlers with four first place finishes.  McElroy won the K1 500m distance, paired with Maggie Hogan (Oklahoma City, Okla.) to win the K2 200m and 500m events, and then took the K4 500m title with Hogan, Nicole Mallory (West Henrietta, N.Y.) and Arezou Fakhr (Oklahoma City, Okla.).  McElroy also placed third in K1 200m final, behind 2nd place finisher Ariel Farrar-Wellman (Bethesda, Md.) and ahead of the 4th place Hogan.

In Men’s Senior Kayak, Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club (LCKC) teammates Chris Miller (Gainesville, Ga.) and Stanton Collins (Gainesville, Ga.) won the K2 200m and 1000m races. Individually, Miller placed 6th in the K1 200m and 8th in the K1 1000m distances.

LCKC rowed to victory in Men’s Senior Canoe with Ian Ross (Washington, D.C.) taking 1st in C1 1000, C2 1000 with Ben Hefner (Gainesville, Ga.), and C4 1000 with Hefner, Rob Finlayson (Gainesville, Ga.), and Matthew Lam. Ross also placed 5th in the C1 200m race, behind Hefner in 3rd place.
