New “Apocalypso” Ride Opening at Lanier Islands Water Park

Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is set to launch a new water park this season called “Fins Up Water Park“. The waterslide roller coaster attraction is tentatively scheduled to open May 4th in advance of the Summer peak tourist season.

This waterslide is said to have “the most significant drop of its kind in the US“.

In addition to the new waterslide coaster, visitors can expect the following:

  • Three new slides
  • New premium cabanas
  • Additional food & beverage options (TBD)
  • Expanded Wibit Aquatic Adventure

This “multi-million-dollar” upgrade isn’t without some controversy on social media, mainly due to the history of water accidents on the lake.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, it’s not uncommon to see a handful of tragic fatalities or drownings each year on the lake.

Counterpoint: Lake Lanier is also one of the largest contiguous lakes in the United States and one of the most popular destinations for water sports in the Southeast. The mixture of alcohol “BUIs”, varying water levels, and swimming or operating boats in unsafe areas is often the culprit.

That said, with every accident or announcement, these arguments (and the “haunting rumors”) and the sordid history around “Oscarville” tend to resurface

This may enhance the attraction for “thrill seekers” and despite the online detractors, Lake Lanier continues to be a growing and popular destination for Summer vacationers, particularly those looking to beat the heat in the Atlanta Metro suburbs.
