“Drain Lake Lanier” Plans Proceed

police patrol empty lakeUnconfirmed reports say a group known as “Drain, Refill & Incorporate Lake Lanier” — also known as DRILL — is moving ahead with plans to drain Lake Lanier in the near future.

Should the draining begin next winter, Lanier couldĀ return to full pool by 2019, the 60th anniversary of the lake reaching full pool in 1959.

This unusual idea has several proponents, all of whom agree that draining one of America’s most popular Army Corps of Engineers lakes would release “old” water and allow more room for fresh water to fill the lake.Ā  In their words, “Isn’t that what we want?Ā  Fresh water?”

One source close to the group, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the plan is simple.Ā  Their slogan is “Out with the old, in with the new!”

Rumors say citizens of Florida and Alabama think the idea is, in the words of one unidentified source, “Brilliant!”Ā  Snail darter defenders are also said to be part of the coalition of groups espousing the draining and refilling idea.

A splinter group, with an unknown number of supporters, is reportedly hoping to turn Lake Lanier into a city, after it is incorporated.Ā  That would allow the new town to keep money raised from usage and entertainment taxes to be charged all users.

One person who says he has first-hand knowledge of the group’s plans says “Lanierville” is the new city’s preferred name, after objections to “Waterworld” were voiced by the law firm, Tripplehorn, Hopper & Black; however, we were unable to substantiateĀ this information.

Fisherpeople will be especially perturbed if the lake is drained.

Proponents called them “whiners” who have lost sight ofĀ how easy fishing will be as water is released.Ā  One person was quoted as saying, “Dang!Ā  Fishing without water would be more fun than shooting them in a barrel!”

Lakeshore homeowners will be encouraged by the group’s plans to continue police patrols where the water’s edge once was, until the lake is “better than ever!”

DRILL’s final findings are scheduled to be available for review on April 1, 2014.Ā  We’ll keep you posted.
