Lake Lanier, we have a problem.  An illegally beached houseboat in a cove near Flat Creek Road in Oakwood, GA is polluting Lanier.  We need your help removing it.

According to Lake Lanier Association Executive Joanna Cloud “gasoline, oil, batteries, a propane tank, as well as a lot of debris on this vessel [are] now leaching or floating into the water.  I don’t know when the last time [the previous owner] had the toilet tank pumped out but I do know that he was living on this vessel as his primary residence.”

Unfortunately, the previous owner passed away, possibly without a valid will.

Joanna says, “The houseboat has been sitting on this shoreline since he passed.  I’m guessing the battery went dead and the bilge pump stopped working.  It starting sinking in October.”

We are not trying to blame anyone.  We only want to find a way to remove this blight from our drinking reservoir.

Contact with our friends at the Army Corps of Engineers, local law enforcement agencies and the GA DNR Environmental Protection Division has been pleasant but frustrating.  No one seems to know what to do.
