The 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Atlanta will be celebrated at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue, Saturday, September 12, 2015.
According to information the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Information Center in Atlanta, this unique cultural and sporting event has expanded to 50 teams competing before 5,000 spectators on Lake Lanier at Clarks Bridge Park.
Hong Kong introduced the world’s first international races in 1976. Now, dragon boat racing has clubs and associations throughout Asia, Europe and North America.
The sport dates back 2,000 years and originated from an ancient Chinese legend.
Dragon boats are a spectacle to behold. The slim, 39-foot teakwood (or fiberglass) racer is crafted today in only a handful of boat-yards in Hong Kong.
Distinguished by a fierce-looking dragon’s head at the prow and a tail at the stern, traditional dragon boats require thirty days, three craftsmen, and years of practice to produce.
The Lake Lanier Olympic Venue offers an absolutely beautiful background for the Dragon Boat activities.
