Chicken Wings? From Buffalo? Really?

“Why do they call them ‘buffalo wings?'” ~~ “I dunno. I was gonna ask you.” ~~ “Maybe Robert Sutherland knows?”

Associating Buffalo with BBQ wings is like pretending Las Vegas is the home of bluegrass or that Debutante Cotillions first began in Newark.

The truth is if you don’t have a Southern accent, you cannot do BBQ.  Case closed.

Yes, I know.  “Buffalo wings” (pronounced “wangs” by aficionados) were “invented” in Buffalo, supposedly at a place called Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar and Restaurant.

The day before Halloween in 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, the Anchor Bar’s owner, supposedly made the first Buffalo wings as a late-night snack for her son.

[PLEASE NOTE: Ladies, if your kids want late-night snacks, DO IT!!!  You might become a bazillionaire … and rich too!  Your death might even be announced in The New York Times.]

Teressa (as the fable goes) had a bunch of extra chicken wings.  So, she fried them up (never down), added sauce and served them with celery and bleu cheese dressing.

The rest is history.  Buffalo — The City of Rust — now designates July 29th as “Chicken Wing Day.”

Teressa?  It’s said the Anchor Bar serves 35 tons of chicken each month.

But I digress…

The restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings will open a 5,700 square foot facility in Gainesville on Monday, November 12th, close to Lake Lanier on Dawsonville Highway in the Beechwood Crossing Shopping Center, with Olive Garden and Cheddar’s as neighbors.

Buffalo Wild Wings’ Regional Manager Marcus Montgomery says, “We will kick-off great food and good times at the new Gainesville location beginning Monday,  November 12.”

Please show Southern hospitality to Marcus’s crew if they’re confused when you order wangs.
