It’s hard to believe that a duck could live through all the blessed rainfall we had on Sunday, September 30, 2012 and Monday, October 1st.
Lake Lanier’s water level rose by 1.33 feet between Monday morning, October 1st and Tuesday morning, October 2nd. The official rainfall total, as measured by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), came to 3.44 inches. Unofficial reports of more than seven inches of rain were common elsewhere from this storm.
According to NOAA, the rainfall was the most ever received in Gainesville in any 24-hour period since records were first kept 120 years ago.
Thankfully, there was not any severe weather that accompanied the much needed rainfall — although it made driving difficult with all the “ponding” on our roadways.
As gravity does its stuff, runoff should add to Lanier’s depth over the next several days.
The gully washer wasn’t entirely beneficial. The Gainesville Times reported on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 that “between 1 and 1.5 million gallons of partially treated wastewater bypassed the final treatment process and discharged into Flat Creek.”
