If you’re ever on Jeopardy! and the answer is “They blew it up.”  Here’s the correct question: “What happened to the old Clarks Bridge in Gainesville, Alex?”

Yup.  After months of construction delays, detours, noise, mud and watching big machines go Bang!!, the original bridge was blasted into Lake Lanier.

The updated span has more room for cars, bicycles and pedestrians trying to get across the point where Lake Lanier meets the Chattahoochee.

Watch the Clarks Bridge explosion

Our friends with the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue captured the explosion for us.

So long old bridge!

We commend our friends for waiting for the new bridge to be completed before blowing up the old Clarks Bridge.

That kind of wisdom and insight might have prevented Gainesville from erecting the famous Bridge to Nowhere — also known as Hall County’s most expensive spot to display holiday banners and/or flags.

The Lake Lanier Olympic Venue is a treasure and we’re thankful that the bridge to the rowing venue will deliver picnickers, rowers, lake gawkers, swimmers, fisherpeople, and plain folks like you and me … to enjoy Lake Lanier.
