The promotional material about the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) races at Road Atlanta over the Halloween weekend mentions “fire-breathing Corvettes.” Ain’t that the truth!
SCCA races include the widest and wildest variety of cars driven by amateur and semi-pro drivers anywhere this side of I-285 on a hot Saturday night in July.
If you’re brave enough to attend, you’ll witness races with production-based cars, such as:
- the smallest commuter vehicles
- Vipers & Vettes
- single-seat formula cars with 40-hp VW engines and 600cc motorcycle drivetrains
- winged monsters that resemble F1 or Indy Cars
- tube-frame “silhouette” GT cars that resemble production cars and
- multiple classes of open cockpit sports racers with varying levels of performance.
- And (ready?) races for compact pick-up trucks!
All these cars can’t be on the track at the same time so there are multiple races for the different classes throughout the weekend, sometimes as many as eight in one day.
Not into one race or another? Pffft. Wait a half-hour and browse around Vendorville until the next race gets the checkered flag.
If you don’t want to sit in one spot all day, you can move around to other viewing spots around the track during the longer three-hour races or any time you’d like.
Road Atlanta invites everyone with a safe street car to join us for the Performance Driving Experience. During Sunday’s Quiet Time (10 AM – noon), Road Atlanta conducts a Performance Driving eXperience (PDX). This is not a competition activity, so it is open to a much wider variety of street cars only. Drivers are placed in one of three groups based on their experience and each group gets two 20-minute sessions on the track. Passing is allowed in designated areas with a “point by” and instructors ride with Novice students, but otherwise you get to experience Road Atlanta at greater than normal highway speeds.
Check out the Atlanta Region SCCA website (www.atlantascca.org) for more information.
Finally, at each SCCA weekend they also have Track Tours for the general public during Saturday’s lunch break.
For $20 per car you can take your street car out to see the rolling hills of Road Atlanta from a different perspective. Everyone in the car must sign an insurance waiver and top speeds are controlled via a pace car leading the group.
There are so many way to enjoy SCCA races at Road Atlanta but one of the best is kids under 12 get in for free with a paying adult.
