Monday, September 16, 2013, is going to be a wonderful day.

When was the last time you took the day off, went to a glorious park and hung out with the likes of Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal and the wonderful man who had Don Carter State Park named after him?  Here’s your big chance!

There’s even more fun than that waiting for you at the official opening ceremony, beginning at 11 AM, at Don Carter State Park.

If that’s not enough to get you there, how about this: free admission!  Yup.  The regular $5 parking fee will be waived for the day.

Play in the sand, have a picnic, camp, launch your boat, let the kids loose on the playgrounds, walk a mile or two in your own shoes on delightful trails, catch a fish or three, cook out or just sit in the shade and watch everybody else run around while you relax.

Drive your RV, pitch a tent or rent a cabin and stay a while.  Or just look around and make your plans to return later.

Don Carter State Park is way up at the north end of the lake, on the Chattahoochee River.

North Georgia’s newest park is destined to be loved by generations of campers, hikers and folks the world over.

The lakeside cabins are open for business too.  Each has two-bedrooms, a rocking-chair porch, a view of the lake, grills, picnic tables, parking and the best neighbors on earth.

Stop by the Visitors Center for snacks, hats & apparel, park maps and free smiles.  There’s a Coke machine out front too.

When you visit, bring your boat.  There’s plenty of room to park boats & trailers at the main boat ramp, and 15 more will fit at the second boat ramp reserved for RV campers and cabin visitors.

Don’t have a boat of your own?  No worries, mate.  Don Carter State Park has a giant fishing pier!

Every kid is guaranteed to catch a big fish on every cast! (Some restrictions apply.)

Now there’s no excuse not to go fishing on Lake Lanier … with your kids or somebody else’s.

If you catch some fish and you want to fillet them before you head home to have them for dinner, stop by the fish cleaning station provided by the park.

We would like you and your family to go jump in the lake.

Or, if you would prefer, simply hang out on the beach.

There aren’t any lifeguards, so you’ll have to be especially careful, but for wading and splashing and swimming in Lake Lanier, it’s perfect.

We hope you’ll bring your family and friends to the dedication ceremony on Monday, September 16th.

If your boss gives you a hard time about taking the day off, just say you need to meet with the governor on official business.
