The Dam Store has been an icon on Lake Lanier since the 1950s, selling bait, snacks, cold drinks, and handing out free smiles and Southern hospitality for generations.
A residence adjacent to the Dam Store, on Buford Dam Road, caught fire early in the morning on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. That portion of the complex was a total loss.
The restaurant at the Dam Store incurred some damage but was not destroyed.
The good news is there were no injuries to the family of six living in the residence at the time of the fire. The family has been managing the store.
They escaped unharmed after being alerted by a six-year-old boy in the family who was up watching television. He smelled smoke and everyone got out in time.
We are thankful no lives were lost in this blaze.
Gwinnett fire inspectors will work to determine the cause of the fire.
