Traffic Delays Near Lake Lanier Islands

trafficOur friend Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation says traffic will shuffle at the intersection of State Route 13/Atlanta Highway at State Route 347/Lanier Islands Parkway, as part of the widening of SR 347.

Weather permitting, the contractor will begin shifting traffic on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 9 AM.  Work will continue throughout the day and should conclude prior to the onset of rush hour traffic.

Delays are expected as the shift occurs.

The traffic shuffle allows crews to rebuild the original lanes of SR 13, as traffic runs in newly built lanes.  The shuffle only affects a short section of SR 13, near its intersection with SR 347.

A similar shift is planned on McEver Road at SR 347, Tuesday, July 2nd, if weather permits.

The 1.7 mile long widening of SR 347/Lanier Islands Parkway from I-985 to McEver Road is under contract to C.W. Matthews Contracting, Inc. of Marietta for $11.6 million.  The contract completion date is November 30, 2014.

Each day, hundreds of Georgia Department of Transportation employees and contractors work on dozens of highway, bridge and intersection improvements throughout the state.  Their work often brings them and heavy machinery in close proximity to travel lanes. Fifty-seven Georgia DOT personnel and many more motorists, passengers and contractors’ workers have been killed in highway work zone accidents since 1973.  Please help us prevent these tragedies by slowing down; being especially attentive and cautious as you pass through construction work zones; and always driving responsibly.
