November 2012 ended perfectly for our friends in Helen, Georgia, when the town’s friendliness and hospitality to those who hike the Appalachian Trail were recognized.

Helen was honored by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) as the latest Appalachian Trail Community — signifying Helen’s commitment to America’s most beloved trail and those who begin their northbound hikes not far away at Springer Mountain.

Members of the ATC and the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club (GATC) joined with local officials and dignitaries to mark the occasion.

Steve Gibson — the ATC’s Community Committee Chairman — opened the ceremonies, then Charles Aiken — a vital member of GATC — played the National Anthem.

ATC Director Mark Wenger took time to attend the presentation, along with Morgan Sommerville, ATC’s Southern Regional director, and Julie Judkins who encourages and organizes these events.
