Worrying Signs for Lake Lanier Water Levels?

I hate to be a pessimist, but things could be looking better for the water levels on Lake Lanier this year.

March was wet, but that was an unusual month for us this year. According to a climatologist in the USA Today:

“Georgia is one area we’ll really have to watch,” says Miskus. More than 63% of the state is now in the worst two levels of drought, the highest percentage of any state.

Lake Lanier climbed steadily during the first part of the year until reaching about 5 feet below full pool, but over the last couple of weeks we’ve been traveling back in the opposite direction.

By mid-April in both 2010 and 2011, we were close to full pool although we are doing better than both 2009 and 2008.

That being said, lake levels start to drop around now and we don’t often have a severe drought to contend with as well. Lake Lanier water levels will only fall from now until September / October. The only question is how far they’ll fall.
