Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club (LCKC) will play host to the first-ever Gainesville/Hall Dragon Boat Challenge (GHDBC) June 7, 2014.

LCKC says Dragon Boat racing is the second-most popular participation activity in the world, behind soccer.

The GHBDC is designed for business, government agencies, churches and neighborhood associations to assemble teams and ‘challenge’ other like-groups.  For example: Gainesville City Schools vs. Hall County Schools, Jackson EMC vs. Georgia Power; Hall County Sheriff’s office vs. Cities’ PD’s; Fire Departments, Churches/place of Worship, Banks, Physicians’ offices, Heat/AC companies, etc.

This event will benefit the Hall County chapter of Special Olympics Georgia.

Teams will compete in distances of 200 meter, 100 meter, and an optional 1,000 meter race in a looped course.

There will be award categories including: best costumed drummer, most enthusiastic team, best overall team theme, and race awards 1st  through  3rd in categories such as those listed above; Educational, Municipal, Corporate, Community, Open, when 3 or more teams are under that category.  Open Teams will have at least eight ladies, plus a drummer.

Team entry fees are $600.00.  For a team of 20 Paddlers plus drummer, that works out to only $28.57 per person for a days’ worth of fun teamwork on Lake Lanier!

Entry includes a one hour practice after working hours at the Olympic Venue in the week preceding the event.

Teams will be coached by experienced dragon boat paddlers including some of the local athletes recently named to the United States National Dragon Boat Team, who will be competing in Poland at World Championships this August.
