In an economy when most news is about the closing of public parks, we’re happy to inform you that Forsyth County opened its fourth new park.
The official opening date for Old Atlanta Park was June 29, 2012. The momentous occasion was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The approximately 39-acre park is located at 810 Nichols Road, at the intersection of Nichols Road and Old Atlanta Road, across from Lambert High School.
Old Atlanta Park’s 34-acres of passive-use space feature:
- a natural playground
- a tot-lot for children age six and under
- two pavilions
- a 1-mile walking trail and
- a spray pad.
The park’s remaining five acres house the 40,000-square foot Old Atlanta Park Recreation Center, which opened in February 2012.

Two more parks opened on June 28, 2012: Haw Creek Park and Chattahoochee Pointe. They are both green space passive-use parks.
Haw Creek Park is located at 2205 Echols Road and spans about 85 acres. Amenities include:
- an approximately 3.3-mile multi-use trail for both foot travel and mountain bikes
- pavilions
- a multi-pod playground with a woodlands theme.
Chattahoochee Pointe is a 100-acre park at 5790 Chattahoochee Pointe Drive off of Old Atlanta Road. The park borders the Chattahoochee River. Its features include:
- a canoe launch
- two pavilions
- more than 2 miles of walking trails
- a river-themed, nature-inspired playground.

Last, but not least, the new Caney Creek Preserve opened on Friday, June 22, 2012 with a dandy ribbon cutting ceremony.
Caney Creek Preserve has about 63-acres of green space. This passive-use park is located at 2755 Caney Road, west of the intersection of Caney Road and Brookwood Road.
Caney Creek Preserve features:
- 1.2 miles of walking trails
- a dog park
- two pavilions
- natural amphitheater
- a unique playground with an archeological dig site and
- water play area.

Acquisition of the land for these four new parks was funded by the Parks, Recreation and Green Space Bond approved by Forsyth County voters in February 2008. Construction of the parks was funded by a combination of the Parks, Recreation and Green Space Bond, Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and Impact Fees.
