Alas, the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club (LCKC) has canceled its plans to hold the 2017 Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day.
Why? The lack of rain, of course. The lake is down so low you can almost see China from the LCKC boat docks, if you stick your head underwater long enough.
Please Note: Do not try this at home. Thank you.
As if this is a surprise to anyone slightly smarter than your neighbor’s stupid dog, now it’s raining. Actually, it’s pouring at my house right now. The Gainesville forecast “calls for” (Why do they always say that?) rain from December 12th – 20th.
2017 Polar Bear Plunge Canceled
Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club’s Annual Polar Bear Plunge, will not be held on New Year’s Day due to the dangerously low lake level. If the lake level returns to a safe level we may schedule for a later date.

Remember the scene in Office Space where the guy is stuck in traffic and every lane but his is moving … but when he changes lanes, all the other lanes move? Of course you do. We’ve all been there.
Who hasn’t planned an outdoor wedding or family reunion on a day when hordes of locusts and/or grasshoppers strike?
And who hasn’t moved an outdoor wedding indoors — just to be cautious — on the day when the weather turned out to be perfect?
My guess is there’s still time for the 2017 Polar Bear Plunge to be rescheduled for New Year’s Day. We’ll keep you posted.
What’s more likely? Having to cancel the Polar Bear Plunge due to flooding.
Smart folks will buy their flood insurance today.
