You’re going to think this is a big fat lie or a stupidly late April Fool’s Day joke, but it’s the truth.
The State of GA is preparing to take the final step toward declaring its first song ever to be recognized as the official song of any state roadway.
In 2012, Rep Tommy Benton introduced Resolution HR1642, which declared a particular stretch of GA Highway 98 as the “Highway 98” By Ricky Fitzpatrick Highway. With great public approval, the resolution passed, and local, award-winning Singer and Songwriter Ricky Fitzpatrick became the first Georgian ever to receive such an honor.
Commemorative road signs will be erected by the GA DOT, April 8, 2014 (which happens to be the 98th day of the year), each indicating beginning and ending points of the designated highway. One sign will be posted outside of Commerce, as GA Hwy 98 crosses the Hwy 441 Bypass. The other will be posted at the crossing of GA Hwy 98 and Gen. Daniels Ave N, outside of Danielsville.
An unveiling ceremony will take place at the Commerce location (weather permitting), Saturday April 12, at 2 PM, at which time the signs will be uncovered. Fitzpatrick will make a brief statement, make a few public thanks, then conduct an informal question and answer time, open to individuals and members of the local press. (Directions, posted online.)
