Polar Bear Swim on New Year’s Day

There are probably screwier activities than jumping off a perfectly safe, dry boat dock into frigid water when there is absolutely no need to do so.

Okay, that’s a lie.  Jumping into cold water in the middle of winter takes the frozen cake, in my humble opinion.

Our friends at the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club — comprised of otherwise humane individuals — mercilessly take advantage of people who are willing to PAY for the opportunity to dive into Lake Lanier’s icy waters to celebrate the New Year (and the onset of hypothermia).

Tuesday, January 1, 2013, will mark the 16th anniversary of the Polar Bear Swim near the Olympic Rowing Venue’s timing tower.

Your tax-deductible donation of $25 gets you a bowl of chili, some dessert, a warm drink, a long-sleeve T-shirt and the chance to subtly mention to everyone you meet that you took a dive into brutally cold water to start 2013 off right.

Got a really crazy family?  Here’s your big chance to cash in on the insanity!  Four immediate family members can sign up for a total of only $50.00!

For added incentive, prizes will be given to winners in the following categories:

  • biggest splash
  • best costume and
  • best dive.

(Personally, I would rather pay for the T-shirt, eat the chili and dessert, and stay dry.)
