The secret catfish pond at the US Army Corps of Engineers headquarters on Lake Lanier jumped with activity on July 27, 2016 when Commander of the South Atlantic Division Brigadier General Turner of the Corps met with a bunch of happy kids who were let in on the secret.
The water is stocked with fish to delight invited guests — especially children with special needs.
General David Turner attended an event kicking off the Every Kid in a Park program, where he handed out free passes to Corps facilities to a bunch of great kids.
Loyal volunteers were on hand to help the boys and girls bait their hooks and reel in a few fish, using gear provided by the Lanier Striper Club.
The ultimate goal of Every Kid in a Park is (ready?) getting kids to go to parks and learn to love all they can discover there.
In the words of General Turner, “It’s a community outreach to expose 4th Graders to fishing and the outdoors … and all it offers. Â We want them to learn about our natural resources and to enjoy them.”
Lake Lanier’s Corps of Engineers Resource Manager Nick Baggett was on hand to greet the kids and Corps personnel who visited.
Rangers and volunteers will soon be in schools speaking about the Every Kid in a Park promotion.
They’ll talk about the joys and dangers that kids might find.  Water Safety and Boating Safety will be a part of the message of how much fun kids can have hiking, playing in parks and just enjoying nature.
