Once a year, Trout Unlimited and Chattahoochee River Keepers round up volunteers to pick up trash left behind by irresponsible miscreants who believe that’s the way the world should work.

At the risk of “enabling” slobs, more civilized citizens went into the woods to carry out other people’s trash during Sweep the Hooch.

How much garbage was left behind by inconsiderate visitors at Don Carter State Park on the upper edges of Lake Lanier?  Would you believe two tons?  More than two dozen volunteers and staff picked up over 4,000 pounds of trash strewn about by folks who simply choose not to pick up after themselves.

At Sweetwater Creek State Park, 12 people collected 300 pounds of trash.  The total amount collected all locations was a record-breaking 7.3 tons!

Our community is ashamed of those who consider beautiful parks their dumping ground, while we are proud of our more noble neighbors for picking up the slack … and the trash.

Thanks for Sweep the Hooch!
