Weekend Events at Don Carter State Park

Don Carter State Park is rolling out the red carpet this weekend to mark the beginning of May.  Despite the swim advisory due to the bacteria, there’s a jam packed schedule of marvelous events planned.  From bilingual hikes to celebrate Cinco de Mayo to unique orchid spotting hikes, and from kayak instruction to moonlight paddles, there’s something for all to enjoy.  Though it’s best to stay out of the water at the moment, you definitely don’t want to miss out on the great events at Don Carter this weekend.

Al Aire Libre Hike

  • Date:  Friday, May 5th
  • Time:  3pm
  • Meeting Place:  Meet at the boat ramp.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Don Carter with a guided hike in Spanish, with an English translation.  Be sure to wear closed shoes and to bring water and insect repellent.  Phone 678-450-7726 to register in advance.  There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee.

Intro to Kayaking

  • Dates:  Friday, May 5th, May 19th & May 26th
  • Time:  6-7:30pm
  • Meeting Place:  Meet at the boat ramp.

This program is for beginner kayakers who are older than 16 and can swim.  The park provides the equipment, but participants should bring water and sunscreen.  Pre-registration is required, and can be done by phone: 678-450-7726.  The cost is $25, plus the $5 per vehicle parking fee.

Walking in Lady’s Slippers

  • Date:  Saturday, May 6th
  • Time:  10am
  • Meeting Place:  Meet at the visitor center.

Participants will learn about the Pink Lady Slipper, which is a unique orchid native to Georgia and found in Don Carter.  They will hike and try to spot the Pink Lady Slipper in bloom.  Participants should bring water and insect repellent.  Phone 678-450-7726 to register in advance.  There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee.

Bilingual Family Hike

  • Date:  Saturday, May 6th
  • Time:  3:30pm
  • Meeting Place:  Meet at the boat ramp.

Learn about native plants and wildlife on this guided Spanish/English bilingual hike.  Participants should bring water and wear sturdy hiking shoes and comfortable clothes.  Phone 678-450-7726 to register in advance.  There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee.

Twilight Lake Lanier Paddle

  • Date:  Saturday, May 6th, May 20th & May 27th
  • Time:  7-8:30pm
  • Meeting Place:  Meet at the boat ramp.

Enjoy a sunset, ranger-led paddle to look for wading birds and raptors.  This program is open for anyone who can swim, but children need to be 8 and older and accompanied by an adult.  Participants can bring their own kayak/canoe, or Don Carter has a limited amount of rentals available.  Participants should bring water and a flashlight.  Pre-registration is required, and can be done by phone: 678-450-7726.  The cost is $15/person if you bring your own kayak/canoe or $25/person with a rental.  There is a $5 per vehicle parking fee.
