If you had all your oars in the water 41-years ago, you might have had the bright idea to bring dragon boat races to the world.  Too bad, because Hong Kong introduced this spectacular sport in 1976.  Cities around the world have embraced the fun, symbolism and enthusiasm ever since.

Dragon boats being thrust through the waters of Lanier, powered by friends and (just for the races) foes, is oddly elegant.  Hideous heads on the extremely colored crafts take on a bizarre beauty as you begin to enjoy the festivities.

For more than 20 years this cultural festival grown in popularity.  From a meager beginning with “a handful of teams” to 50+ teams and 5,000 spectators gracing the waters off Lake Lanier Olympic Park, site of the 1996 Summer Olympic rowing and paddling events.

At 9 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2016, the races begin.  “Chinese artisans” will thrill the crowds with their succulent exotic food and oriental wares.  The opening ceremonies will be performed at noon, with cultural dances and exhibitions that you won’t often see in North Georgia.

Come and enjoy the celebration at The Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival — one of the year’s most fascinating occasions.
