Lake Lanier’s Dock Permits & Asteroids

road in Lake Lanier
Congratulations! You’re a winner in the Dock Lottery!

Yes, there is still a possibility for you to get a permit for a dock on Lake Lanier.

Yes, there is a possibility that a huge asteroid will strike Earth on February 15th.

No one knows which of these two occurrences is more likely than the other.  Sorry.

Try to follow this math with me.  According to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) office at Lake Lanier, as of February 11th, there were:

  • 187 Starting Permits
  • 281 Requests were Submitted
  • 320 Permits Requested
  • 75 are Pending
  • 8 are Recommended
  • 95 were Approved
  • 143 were Denied

Only 40% of the non-Pending Permits were approved.

Now pay attention because this gets tricky.

If six people get on a train in Gainesville and four loaves of bread are divided among 57 people who each eat 84% of a loaf … how many Dock Permits remain?

Right!  According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, 91 Dock Permits remain.

Now, how many applications will it probably take to dole out 91 Dock Permits?

<tick, tick, tick, tick>

BUZZZZZZZ!!!

Oh, I’m sorry.  You didn’t answer quickly enough.

The correct answer is approximately 150.  Which means you might have a chance for a Dock Permit if you quickly get on a train in Gainesville carrying a loaf of bread; unless you get hit by an asteroid.
