We regret to inform you of the death of Robert Armistead.

According to the latest information provided to lakelanier.com by Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Communications/Outreach Specialist Melissa Cummings, Mr. Armistead was 55 and lived in Hoschton, GA.

Shortly after 10 AM on Sunday morning, January 6, 2013, a member of Aqualand Marina spotted an overturned 12-14 foot Jon boat about 10 feet away from shore in a cove off Lights Ferry Road.

Police were notified and the Hall County Fire Department responded with marine rescue units, along with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources

Sgt. Kiley Sargent of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the dive team retrieved Mr. Armistead’s body following a shore sweep, boat search and surveillance by air.

Initial reports included the possible sighting of a woman also in the boat with Mr. Armistead.  Later, the dive team from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office determined there was no other victim.  Crews wrapped up their search around 4 PM.

Foul play in the death is not suspected; however, the body was sent to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy and toxicology screen.

The incident remains under investigation by DNR Critical Incident Reconstruction Team.

We extend our condolences to Mr. Armistead’s friends and family.
