Jacob Wheeler won the Forrest Wood Cup bass tournament by landing 60 pounds of fish from Lake Lanier in four days.
His prize came to $8,333.33 per pound — or $500,000 for those of us who fish better than we can multiply.
Wheeler had won other tournaments — at the ripe old age of 21 — but coming in first place in what’s known as the Super Bowl of Fishing tripled his previous career earnings.
Last year, Wheeler stunned the bass world by winning the 2011 Bass Fishing League All-American, a championship event for weekend fisherpeople hosted by the FLW Tour.
By fishing up the Chattahoochee River (my favorite spot anywhere on Lake Lanier), Wheeler finally settled the two-decade-old argument between myself and Don Poole about the best place to land lunkers.
Had Wheeler taken Mr. Poole’s advice, he would have caught three guppies, two gar and a confused sunfish, as Mr. Poole often did himself while aimlessly wandering the lake near Flat Creek.
Wheeler worked the Chattahoochee River catching bass by flipping a Trigger X Flippin’ Tube and a Chatterbait. A Rapala X-Rap Prop gave Wheeler two of his biggest fish.
Troy Morrow, from Eastanollee, GA, won $35,000 for coming in 8th.
