Wanna Ride a Bicycle for 124.7 Miles?

I know.  You don’t believe that anybody would willingly ride a bicycle that far … without being chased by zombies, but it’s true.  (Not the zombie part, the part that people really ride bikes that far.)

If you think a “bike” is something you peddle, you might enjoy the 200k bike ride planned for Saturday, August 18, 2012, starting in Acworth, GA.

Before you get out of your Barcalounger — after you have a beer and a slice of cold pizza — and walk all the way to the garage to blow the dust off your 92-pound Schwinn, let me break the news to you gently.

This is for people who look good in spandex … and not the kind worn to Wally World or Waffle Heaven at 3 AM.

This is for athletes who think it’s “fun” to ride peddle-power bikes for 200 kilometers.  That’s 124.7 miles, Bubba.  (Farther than I can go on my 98 HP motorcycle without stopping for rest, food, water, rest and a Yoo-hoo.)

But, if you’re the kind of person who’d rather spend money on graphite tires with titanium air … instead of traveling to Key West to drink and sing Jimmy Buffet songs at sunset, this might be heaven for you.

Where

This ride starts at Cauble Park (2293 Beach St., Acworth, GA 30101) near historic downtown Acworth. The park features a beach, picnic areas with grills right on Lake Acworth.

When

Wild.  I always thought all the crazy people were on their way home at 6 AM on a Saturday.  Bicyclists are just getting rolling at 6 AM!

(Ha! Get it? Rolling? Like a bike? Get it?)

They’ll roll at 6 a.m. and head to Cave Spring, not far from the Alabama border, via country roads in Cartersville and Taylorsville.

Once in Cave Spring, you will find fresh, cold, drinking water bubbling from a spring in Rolater Park, the first “control” after the start.  Replenish your water bottles here and enjoy the best drinking water around.

Details

  • Start Time:  6 AM  (Seriously.  Like the 6 AM when the sun comes up.  Only the sun sometimes comes up later.)
  • Time Limit:  13.5 hours (7:30 PM).
  • Entry Fee:  $15 (will include some food and drinks at the finish).

Wait — There’s More

Are you thinking that riding your bike — with a seat smaller than a Britney Spears’ thong — for 124.7 miles was as good as life gets?

Ha!  No way, José!

If/when you make it to Cave Spring, you can take your partner on a romantic stroll into a cave … for only a dollar.

Please Note:  Hollers are no longer a dollar.  Now they’re free, so knock yourself out.

The cave stays at a steady 55 degrees, just the way the bats like it.  It is, however, a “nice treat on a hot summer’s day.”

There’s a cash-only snack bar at the cave where you can get sodas, ice cream, cookies and crackers.  Sorry, they don’t sell bat repellent.

Other points of interest along the way include

  • the Historic Etowah Indian Mounds
  • cuties in spandex
  • a very unique secret control in Acworth and
  • a quick tour of downtown Acworth wraps up the ride.

Bring your appetite and swimsuit and enjoy grilling, swimming and socializing after your ride at the Friday night get together.
