Saturday, April 28, 2012 is the date of Gainesville, GA’s most fowl day: The Annual Spring Chicken Festival!
There’s food, music, vendors, food, a 5k race and … yup, more food!
The Chicken Cook-Off takes place from 10 AM – 4 PM in Roosevelt Square. Prizes will be awarded in both the Professional and Backyard Bar-B-Q divisions. The Grand Champion wins $500 and will possess the coveted Chicken City Cup for one year.
Director of Keep Hall Beautiful Cindy Reed said this is a great day to promote the bird that made Gainesville the Poultry Capital of the World. “This festival gets bigger and bigger every year and the competition for cooking the best chicken is quite fierce. We are Georgia’s ‘Official Chicken Cook-Off’ and our number one rule is to have fun!” Reed said.
Unlimited sampling will be provided by the teams for the public to do their own judging and choose a “People’s Choice” award. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 10.
If you’d like to work up an appetite before dining on (surprise!) chicken on the square, go for a 5K run sponsored by the Lake Lanier Running Club. Registration and Packet Pickup begins at 7:30 Saturday morning in the Wild Wing Cafe parking lot (311 Jesse Jewell Pkwy SW, Gainesville, GA 30501).
There are not many ways to improve upon Spring Chicken Festivals, but we understand there is interest in holding a “Fowl Ball” dance next year. Please be sure to let the organizers know if you support this idea.
