Progress continues on the new bridge over the Chattahoochee River near the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue at Clarks Bridge Park on State Route 284 at the north end of the lake.
Our friends with the Georgia DOT said a concrete pour took place on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 with another one scheduled for Friday, March 6.
Engineers and workers are connecting the pieces of the new span that will — someday — make life easier for travelers on Clarks Bridge Road.
Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer Harold Mull says, “The new bridge … has seven spans. The contractor plans to pour the last two spans this week.” He added, “The last pour is planned for Friday [when] the northbound lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as the concrete pour occurs.”
The DOT says the “pieces” of the bridge include vertical concrete columns, horizontal concrete caps that form a capital T shape on the vertical columns. Then the horizontal bridge beams stretch between the caps.
Steel plates are welded into place between the beams then concrete is poured into the steel pans tying the entire structure together. This concrete forms the driving surface of the bridge.
The current bridge will be torn down after the new bridge — with 12-foot-wide lanes and an 8-foot-wide shoulder in each direction for bicycling or walking — is completed in late December of 2015.
