April 23, 2013 will always be an important day for Lake Lanier.
That’s when Governor Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 136 into law, lowering the legal blood-alcohol limits for those who operate watercraft or hunt in Georgia.
Many law enforcement officials, politicians and members of the families of Kile Glover and Jake & Griffin Prince — young men who lost their lives in 2012 due to boating accidents on Lake Lanier — attended the signing of the legislation.
The beauty of the perfect summer afternoon could not cause us to forget the magnitude of the occasion.
We were witnessing history.
New laws regarding Boating Under the Influence, increasing the age limit for those who must wear flotation devices in moving boats and mandatory safety training for young boaters became the law.
We believe that law will save lives — beginning today.
We encourage you to read the law for yourself. Click Here to Read SB 136
We urge you not to drink and drive … to have plenty of life preservers on board your boat … and to be sure to teach good boating practices for your family.
You might also want to thank the bill’s sponsors, especially:
- Senator Miller of the 49th District
- Senator Unterman of the 45th District
- Senator Murphy of the 27th District
- Senator Sims of the 12th District and
- Senator Tolleson of the 20th District.
We are grateful that our governor signed this life-saving legislation into law.
