Elachee Nature Center’s Safari Benefit Dinner

Elachee Nature Science Center is a 1,500-acre undeveloped treasure inside Gainesville, GA’s city limits that melds four diverse habitats: woodland, lake, stream and wetland.

Thankfully, it will remain undeveloped — due to the conservation easement that was finally granted in 2001, about 23 years after the not-for-profit group was first incorporated.

According to Elachee’s website, that easement is “designed to preserve and protect the conservation values of a property and maintain the dominant woodland, scenic, and natural character of the area including land and water resources. It also protects the plants, animals, and their habitats, prohibiting development that would interfere with the property’s conservation value. Hiking and educational classes are permitted.”

Thirteen miles of hiking trails weave through the preserve, offering you a personal perspective of this precious park.

This biologically diverse urban jungle — one of the largest parks within any city east of the Mississippi River — is chock full of enough flora and fauna to make the world’s least emotional ecologist get absolutely giddy.

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, you’re invited to Elachee Nature Science Center’s fanciest fundraising and fun-raising event of the year: the Safari Benefit Dinner and “Inspired By Nature” Auction.

The swell soiree will be held on the Center’s patio, beginning at 6 PM.  The cost includes beverage and appetizer bars and a low-county boil (not to be confused with “Frogmore Stew,” no matter what wikipedia or other Yankees say).

Along with the cocktails, dinner and jazz, you’ll be able to trade mere money for unique artwork, trips, entertainment activities and goodies from local merchants.   All proceeds benefit environmental education & conservation programs at Elachee Nature Science Center.

It’s not cheap but neither is maintaining a 1,500-acre preserve that’s visited by more than 75,000 people per year.
