Escape the Gold Museum: Hung Jury

There’s a new social activity that sounds spooky and scary but it’s really a lot of fun.  No, I’m not referring to dating, but to “escape rooms” where you solve puzzles with strangers.  There’s one in Dahlonega that you might want to check out.  It’s called Escape the Gold Museum: Hung Jury.

A gentleman named Robert at the Gold Museum answered a few questions for me, before he had to help folks touring the very cool repository of memorabilia from America’s first gold rush.  Right there in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Twenty years before the 1849 gold rush in California, thousands of prospectors flocked into the Cherokee Nation in north Georgia, marking the true beginning of our country’s first gold rush.  Dahlonega thrived and a U.S. Branch Mint opened in 1838, coining more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861.

Today, visitors can see a complete set of these rare coins, a nugget weighing more than five ounces, a large hydraulic cannon and nozzle used to blast soil from mountainsides, film and gift shop.  The museum is housed inside the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, one of the oldest courthouse buildings in Georgia.

Visitors can also explore the courthouse features, including beautiful wooden chapel seats from 1889 and the judge’s chambers.  The town of Dahlonega is a popular destination for gold panning, shopping and sightseeing.  National Register of Historic Places guidelines prevent the addition of an elevator to the courthouse building, so some exhibits on the second floor are not wheelchair accessible.

The Gold Museum is an official State Historic Site.

Escape the Gold Museum: Hung Jury

The year is 1855 and Lumpkin County court is in session. After a single case resulted in three hung juries, Judge Irwin has decided to lock you and your fellow jurors in the jury room until a unanimous verdict is decided. You’ll look for clues, solve puzzles, and examine real historical documents as you work your way through the escape room.

No, you’re not really locked in a room with strangers.  (Or relatives, which can be even more frightening.)  It’s make-believe.  Okay, maybe it is like dating.  But afterward you go your separate ways without an awkward hug.

For your own private escape room experience, please call to reserve your space for two to eight people.  Admission is only $15 per person.
