On a warm summer night the week before school was to begin a group of 20 or so teenagers and young adults gathered in a secluded portion of a closed park to “party.”  Law enforcement arrived to disburse the partiers who immediately scattered away.  One young man ran into the water and became the latest tragic death in Lake Lanier for 2014.

Forsyth Sheriff department spokesman Doug Rainwater says searchers had been looking for that missing young man, now identified as 19-year-old Cody Daniel Gibbs, since the incident began early Tuesday morning, August 5, 2014, near Lanier’s Two Mile Creek Park.

Officer Rainwater told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “We were going to resume the search this morning, and when our first detective arrived here at the cove about 7:15, he saw a body floating in the cove.”

Sadly, the search for Cody Gibbs was over.  Officer Rainwater said the body was recovered from water about 20-foot deep not far from where they were searching on Wednesday.

Authorities suspect Mr. Gibbs drowned, but an autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Cody Daniel Gibbs.
