Every weekend on the scuba board belong to it is the same old thing, everyone going somewhere else to dive beacuse Lake lanier is rather boring for a diver. I am afraid I have to agree. I mean how many stumps, dead trees, mud, sticks and rocks can a person stand anyway?
I say it is time to bring a little interest to the underwater scene at Lake Lanier, let’s ge t the Corps to approve a dive park! Other lakes have done this and boosted scuba diving at their shores by a large percentage. Jocassee has the underwater Junk (a 40 foot wooden boat), an airplane wing, the bones family, some underwater activities (basketball with a bowling ball anyone?) and a couple of lesser boats. Other lakes have airplanes, old culvert pipes, even various vehicles.
By placing the objects at greater than 40 feet in depth they should pose no navigation hazard and properly anchored to the bottom won’t drift anywhere such as the dam. The cost should be low as I already have one boat volunteered for sinking and can probably line up donations of other items of interest.
So…this is in the preliminary stages but I wanted to see what support there would be for such a proposal, so far of the divers I have contacted all have said YES! Great Idea! The objects placed could be used for:
1. Diver wreck training
2. Diver salvage and recovery training
3. Navigation training
4. Testing of side-scan and regular sonar from surface boats
5. Fish structure
So lets all get behind this project and see ifwe can’t make Lanier a better place to dive and have fun!
