Every weekend during August people have been gathering in large number at Clarks Bridge Park on Lake Lanier. They are practicing one of the fastest-growing sports on the lake – Dragon Boat Racing.
Dragon Boat racing is popular across Asia. The boats are long and narrow canoes that are often rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails and are required to carry a large drum aboard.
The rowers are getting ready for September 8th which will see the 12th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival take place on the lake, also at Clarks Bridge.
Last year over 4200 turned out for the races, with over 30 boats racing. Teams come from all over the Atlanta, Gainesville and Athens area with groups representing Cornelia, Suwanee, College Park, Snellville, Stone Mountain, Athens, Riverdale and elsewhere.
