Lake Lanier has a very active windsurfing community. The lake has one of the oldest Windsurfing Clubs in the nation, the Atlanta Board Sailing Club, which has monthly meetings and other activities.
Where to windsurf on Lake Lanier
The main local sailing site is Van Pugh Park on Lake Lanier which has good wind in all directions except South and Southeast.
Other sailing sites include Lake Lanier’s Vann’s Tavern, which is good on East and South East winds, and Lake Allatoona’s Galt’s Ferry.
When to windsurf on Lake Lanier
The windy season is September thru May, with a hard-core group sailing throughout the winter. On a windy weekend day when the temperature is not too cold, there may be up to 20 windsurfers at Van Pugh.
Windsurfing at Lanier during the summer months is possible but due to the lighter winds and excessive boat traffic, some windsurfers skip the summer months.
