The Tour de Georgia is a U.S. professional cycling stage race across the state of Georgia. Its main aim is to benefit the Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
The Tour is one North America’s three highest rated professional cycling events with riders covering 600 miles in six days. The event has a substantial tourism impact with an estimated 600,000 visitors and a $7 million economic impact every year. Past winners included Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis.
The Tour has often come through Lake Lanier with various stages starting and finishing in Gainesville, Braselton and at the Lake Lanier Islands.
The event began in 2003 but was suspended for 2009 because of the economic climate. It is expected to be back in 2010.
