Harbor View Apartments lie on the waterfront, close to Thompson Bridge in Gainesville. That location will soon be home to a new series of luxury condos after approval by the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board.

The site doesn’t currently qualify for dock permits but the builders are hoping the new plans will make the site eligible.

Brett Mercer of Harbor Station, a Gainesville-based corporation, briefly described the plans for 114 condos reaching no higher than five stories and styled in the look of an old English village.

Basically, Mercer said of the project planned off Thompson Bridge Road (Ga. 60), “It’s putting something on the lake that the lake doesn’t currently possess.”

Documents filed with the city’s Development Services department say the current 13 apartment buildings will be demolished, the infrastructure redone and four condominium buildings raised, three of them five stories tall.

There will be a 14-slip community boat dock, underground parking garages and Lanier views for all units.

Tenants of the apartments, at least some of which appear rundown, have been on month-to-month leases and have been given notice they have until the end of December to move.

Construction could take 18 to 24 months and begin in spring if council approves the zoning request for planned unit development, said Mercer, the son of Gainesville developer David Mercer, a managing partner in Harbor Station.

The housing density will not change. Harbor View Apartments also has 114 units.
