Every once in a while somebody or some organization comes up with an idea that makes the rest of us say, “Why didn’t I think of that?”  First Day Hikes (ready?) are hikes that take place on (here it comes!) the first day of each year.
You’ll still have time to sober up from New Year’s Eve, find your car and watch a parade before heading out to the great unknown to commune with nature and other folks who prefer to be outdoors instead of on a sofa.
“Failure is an orphan and success has many fathers,” goes the old saying.  I am not exactly sure who begat the notion.  It’s probably either America’s State Parks or the American Hiking Society.
What is certain is organizations and individuals in all 50 states are choosing from more than 1,100 opportunities to hit trails with new and old friends.
Our pals at Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier are so excited that they’re leading two separate First Day Hikes on Sunday, January 1, 2017. Â The first is scheduled for 10 AM until noon. Â The second hike will be from 2 PM until 4 o’clock.
Both adventures offer a special chance to venture into portions of Don Carter State Park that are otherwise not open to visitors.

The hikes are limited to 15 people each, for a total of 30 happy hikers.
You’ll pay $5.00 to get into Don Carter State Park and another $5.00 for each hiker.  That’s far less than you’ll probably spend on tips to get cold food on New Year’s Eve.  Be sure to wear comfy boots or shoes, not open-toe flip-flops or sandals, please.
