Eric Shanteau is competition swimmer from Snellville, GA, who won two Olympic gold medals on American relay teams.  Hardcore swimmers from the Southeast and beyond will participate and compete with Eric on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Sunset Cove at Lake Lanier at his ‘Swim For Your Life’ fundraiser.

According to the website for this event, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Eric Shanteau and several of his Olympic and USA National teammates will attend the all-day open water swimming competition that will raise funds for cancer research.  Roughly $27,000 has already been raised.  The total is expected to increase after the event.

Swimmers will participate in 500 yard, 1K and 5K distances in Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier.

If you won’t be swimming with Olympians on Saturday, you can join the fundraising to fight cancer — an ugly disease that strikes our loved ones young and old.  By participating and/or fundraising, you will join forces with those who raise funds for cancer research through LIVESTRONG’s programs and services.

Eric Shanteau’s Personal Battle with Cancer

“On June 19, 2008, just one week before he was to compete for a spot on the Olympic Team, Eric was diagnosed with testicular cancer.  Eric was cleared to compete and went on to make the Olympic Team in the 200 breaststroke.  After careful consideration Eric decided to delay treatment and stay on the  team in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of competing in the Olympics.  Despite battling cancer, Eric swam a personal best time at the Beijing Olympics.  Upon returning home Eric underwent treatment and was officially declared cancer free on September 15, 2008.  Since that time he has become a Global Envoy for the LIVESTRONG Foundation and is a voice for young adult cancer awareness.  Eric returned to the Olympics in 2012.  At the London Olympics Eric finished his career by winning a gold medal as a member of the 4 x 100 Medley Relay.”
