Ga. Tech not changing plan for Bowden-less Clemson
Georgia Tech defensive tackle Vance Walker learned that Tommy Bowden eas no longer the Clemson head in atypical fashion. Walker had just finished lifting weights, he said, and "somebody was running around the locker room screaming it." Not one to trust locker room criers, Walker confirmed the news through the Internet.

Ga. Tech quarterback Nesbitt tests strained hamstring
Quarterback Josh Nesbitt tested his right hamstring Sunday, and the results were just what Tech had been hoping for. "I opened it up all the way," Nesbitt said after practice Monday. "We went through every progression, every thing I'd have to do in a game. We did everything." Assuming there are no setbacks, Nesbitt will start Saturday at Clemson, Johnson said.

Why can't UGA score touchdowns?
Athens — Blair Walsh said it was sort of "cool," glancing at the Sanford Stadium scoreboard late Saturday and seeing his four field goals as the margin of victory. But as much as Georgia's football team appreciates the reliable freshman kicker, a downside to the 26-14 win over Tennessee was that the Bulldogs so often had to settle for field goals rather than touchdowns. "We left some points out on the field," coach Mark Richt said.

Dogs stay put in AP poll
Athens — The Bulldogs might as well forget about the polls. Their national perception has been solidified — pretty good team, not very disciplined, not national championship material. But the fact is, all of Georgia's hopes and dreams remain intact. The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-1 SEC) stayed at No. 10 in Sunday's Associated Press rankings and moved up one spot in the coaches' and Harris polls after Saturday's mistake-filled 26-14 win over Tennessee. But the domination displayed between the mishaps could provide positive framework for the rest of the season. "That is something to talk to the team about," coach Mark Richt said Sunday. "You can say, 'Look, men, we're 5-1, we're right in the thick of this thing and we still really haven't played a truly complete game, whether it's turnovers, penalties, making the plays when they present themselves. I mean, no one's going to play a perfect game, but we certainly haven't put it all together yet."

Despite not practicing, White makes catches
Falcons wide receiver Roddy White woke up Sunday morning not certain if he was going to be allowed to play against Chicago. After suffering a head injury in a collision with Lawyer Milloy at practice on Wednesday, he had not practice with the team. He was cleared to play on Saturday, but the final call went down to a "game time decision." "I meet with the doctors and everything," White said. "They were just checking on me Sunday morning, making sure that I was all right. I came in and I didn't have any headaches. No nausea or anything."

Elam makes up for miss to give Falcons win
While the game-winning kick was still sailing through the air, Falcons long snapper Michael Schneck and lineman Jonathan Babineaux were sprinting downfield. They were in a foot race for the souvenir. After Jason Elam's 48-yard field goal went through the uprights, Babineaux picked it up and raced back up field with the ball in hand. Elam was being mobbed by holder Michael Koenen and several other teammates, as the Falcons had pulled off a heart-stopping 22-20 victory over Chicago Bears Sunday.

DE Anderson 'glad' to record first sack
The record will show that at long last, Jamaal Anderson visited some violence upon an opposing quarterback Sunday afternoon. So, OK, it came in the 86th quarter of his career but the Falcons' 22-year-old defensive end recorded his first sack. And he wound up doing much more than that as well, knocking down two straight Kyle Orton passes at one point. At times, he even seemed to dictate play. Yes, Jamaal Anderson.

Coach Smith knew Falcons would battle through
A snippet of Mike Smith's postgame news conference following Sunday's win over Chicago at the Georgia Dome. Opening statement: What a fantastic game, huh? A true 60-minute game. There were a lot of ebbs and flows in the game. We talked all week as a staff to our players [telling them] that we were going to need all three phases to step up and I think they did that. I really think there was a fourth phase too. To see the crowd here today, it was a very rambunctious crowd and I think they helped our football team.

Falcons missed chances in red zone
Nice game. It did not have to be so hard. Before Jason Elam brought down the house, the Falcons should have long sewn this one up.

Palin gets boos, cheers as she drops puck at Flyers game
Philadelphia — To a mixture of boos and cheers, Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial first puck Saturday night at the Philadelphia Flyers' home opener against the New York Rangers. The Alaska governor and self-described "hockey mom" heard a few boos when she walked onto the ice, but that soon turned to polite applause as she headed to center ice with Mike Richards of the Flyers and Scott Gomez — from Alaska — of the Rangers. Palin waved to the crowd and smiled as she dropped the puck to applause and cheers.

Woodson eager to get Hawks back to business
The last time Hawks coach Mike Woodson stalked the sidelines at Philips Arena the building was electric. His team was fighting for its playoff life against Boston in the first round. The atmosphere was as crazy as ever. The coach on the other sideline, Doc Rivers, was in the same boat as Woodson; trying to prove to his many doubters that he belonged. Things will be quite a bit different Monday night, when Woodson opens his fifth season as the Hawks' boss against Charlotte in the team's preseason home opener.

How would you rate the Falcons' performance?

Penalties still issues for Georgia
For once the devastating penalties went against Georgia's opponent. The Bulldogs came into Saturday's game as the second-most penalized team in America with 10.6 per game and they did little to improve on that because they were flagged 11 times again (for 76 yards) on Saturday. But only one of those was a personal foul and none came at a critical time. No, it was Tennessee that drew the dirty laundry on Saturday. Two personal foul calls against UT defensive backs helped propel the Bulldogs on a nine-play, 97-yard touchdown drive at the end of the first half.

Fullback Southerland makes truimphant return
Even when talking about the pass he dropped, Brannan Southerland couldn't wipe the grin off of his face. The Bulldogs' senior fullback played for the first time this season after missing the previous five games with a broken left foot. Southerland was clearly rusty. But coming out injury-free with a touchdown and a Georgia victory had Southerland beaming after the game. "Being out there with the guys, blocking, playing special teams, it was great," Southerland said. "But getting the 'W' was really special."

Stafford reaches 300-yard milestone
Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford had a 300-yard passing game. Finally. Remarkably, he had never broken the 300-yard threshold in his career. He barely did it this time, finishing with 310 yards on 25-of-36 passing.
