Shore Sweep is the one day each year that more garbage comes out of Lake Lanier than goes in.
The Lake Lanier Association gathered 1,000 volunteer angels to comb the lake for all types of trash, flotsam, garbage, jetsam, junk, litter, refuse and unwanted material from around Lanier.
Teresa Henderson said it’s inspiring to see young adults come out to help — even in the rain.
Willing workers picked up tons of stuff from shore to shore, collected it all and took it to marinas and parks for other volunteers to haul away. That job will take days to finish.
Old docks take a beating when the water levels vary as much as they have the past few years. The Styrofoam floats away, the docks sink and old tires used as bumpers go into the water. Anyone who’s spent a day boating knows that junk can fly out of a boat and you can’t always retrieve it.
But it takes a special type of creep to use Lake Lanier — a reservoir for drinking water — as a garbage dump.
Taking part in Shore Sweep also takes a special kind of person — someone who is willing to give up a Saturday to pick up somebody else’s trash.
Kudos to all those who took the time for Shore Sweep.
