Dragon Boat Races on Lake Lanier

There’s nothing quite like the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Races on Lake Lanier.  It’s a fascinating cultural event — and a great excuse for boat racing.

Experience the fun and excitement of the 17th consecutive Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival at the Olympic Rowing Venue on Clarks Bridge Road in Gainesville on Saturday, September 8, 2012, from 7 AM until 5 PM.

The colorful Asian tradition – turned exciting international sporting event — has attracted quite a following.  This event is part of a series of races taking place in major metropolitan areas such as Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York.

The sport itself dates back some 2,000 years and originates from an ancient Chinese legend.

Hong Kong introduced the world’s first international races in 1976.  Since then, dragon boat racing has grown in popularity, with clubs and associations forming in countries throughout Asia, Europe and North America and competitions taking place in the coolest cities around the world including, of course, Gainesville, Georgia.

In addition to the races, Chinese artisans will perform and international foods will be available.

Race categories include:
  • Open
  • Female
  • Mixed
  • BCS (Breast Cancer Survivors)
  • Collegiate
  • High School
  • International
  • Recreational and
  • Law Firms.

(Note: There is no truth to the rumor that Law Firm boats may be sunk at will by competitors.)
