The “mountains” of North Georgia don’t compare to the Alps or the Rockies, but we have a treasure you won’t find anywhere else: Unicoi State Park and Lodge.

If a picture is worth a thousands words, you’d need a thousand pictures to describe the beauty of Unicoi.

After a relaxing drive on Saturday, September 24, 2016, I got a little hungry.  OK, that’s a lie.  I was famished.

As I drove toward Unicoi, I saw a rather large, healthy black bear amble across the road near the fire station on Route 356.

The thought of battling a bear for berries didn’t strike me as all that appealing, nor did the thought of battling for a parking space in nearby Helen and foraging for schnitzel and beer.

Behold, the buffet at Unicoi State Park and Lodge.  What a deal!  I don’t even remember how much it cost — $12.95?  14.95?  Less than I have paid for a bowl of fancy cold soup in my travels.  (Yes, they have plenty of “girl food” in addition to the good stuff.)

Dear Wendy, manager of the Smith Creek Tavern in Unicoi State Park Lodge, was wonderful.  I munched away watching football on several TV screens at once and truly enjoyed a delicious meal in the mountains.
