Shane Watson Guide Service Report: Stripers and Spots on Lake Lanier

The fishing on Lake Lanier has been great some days and slower some days as well.

When the stripers have been up higher in the water column, we’ve done well on white 1/2 ounce Spro bucktails, leadhead flukes, and on Capt. Mack’s four arm u-rigs. Downlined trout and bluebacks have also worked well when the fish have been deeper.

We are also catching and releasing some very big spotted bass on live bait while striper fishing. These bigger spots have been out over open deeper water, feeding with the stripers, in the big bait schools that are 25 to 40 feet deep over a 40 to 60 foot bottom.

We are catching most of our fish from the mouths to the middle of creeks and in deeper coves just off the main lake. Look for the seagulls flying and diving, and graph around in that area.

Some mornings since my last report, the stripers have been very shallow, boiling on the surface and we’ve done well on jigs and flukes. In the winter, it really all depends on how active they are and what depth they are at while you’re out there.

Over the next 120 days, expect to see some of the biggest fish of the year caught.
