Our pal, Joanna Cloud — the executive director of the Lake Lanier Association (LLA) and one of the primary organizers of Shore Sweep — says the 27th Annual Shore Sweep will be one of the biggest yet.

Shore Sweep begins at 8 AM on Saturday, September 27th and doesn’t quit until 1 PM.  More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to remove 30-tons of trash from Lake Lanier in that short period of time.

This is the largest cleanup event in Georgia in terms of volume of trash picked up and is one of the largest inland cleanups in the United States.

Joanna says, “We have more boaters than ever and that’s great!  That will help us remove trash from some of the more remote areas of the lake.”

Your help is needed and appreciated.  If you can fill a trash bag with junk left along the lake by people who believe they don’t have to pick up after themselves, you’ll get a free T-shirt from LLA.

There are ten sites around the lake where you can pitch in to pitch trash out:

  • Bald Ridge Marina
  • Holiday Marina
  • Aqualand
  • Sunrise Cove Marina
  • Gainesville Marina
  • Port Royale Marina
  • Lake Lanier Islands
  • Clarks Bridge Park
  • Gwinnett Park and
  • War Hill Park.

The sites are open from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM.

LLA needs volunteers on land and in power boats, jet skis, pontoons, kayaks and canoes, to remove the most junk out of the lake.

Eight advance drop off locations are open now and will stay open through Friday evening, September 26th.  You may bring bagged trash or large items and leave them at one of these locations.  Volunteers with boats are scheduled to remove it all from these locations on Saturday morning.  This is a great way to help if you are not available to help with Shore Sweep on Saturday.

Please Note:  These advance locations ONLY ACCEPT TRASH WHILE THE SHORE SWEEP SIGNS ARE IN PLACE.  Please DO NOT bring trash to these locations other times of the year.
