One of Gainesville’s most family friendly events — the annual Cracker Fly-In — has been grounded due to stormy weather.

This would have been the event’s 45th year celebrating homebuilt, vintage and warbird aircraft.

Richard Strickland of the EAA’s (Experimental Aircraft Association) Local Chapter 611 was expecting more than 150 assorted flying machines this weekend.

In his words, “Unfortunately, the weather collapsed around us.”

Pilots only get to make one big mistake, so the forecast of thunderstorms, rain and low clouds made the decision to cancel the 2013 event unavoidable.

Mr. Strickland held out a bit of hope the event might be rescheduled for later this year, but we don’t want to get your hopes up.

Should the Cracker Fly-In be held, we’ll keep you posted here.

We commend the organizers of the event for making the wise decision to put safety above showmanship.

We hope to see you at the next Cracker Fly-In!
